In case you haven’t noticed, I’m pretty serious minded (okay…  I’m very serious minded).  Among other things, that means I’m not too interested in most types of entertainment.  My wife says I’m no fun, and she’s probably right (okay…  she is right).

So, having just completed several weeks of long, hard hours at work (and with another difficult week and a half looming), I thought I would lighten things up a little with this post.   I hope you’ll stay with me to the end—I want to ask you a couple of questions.

Below are my 10 all-time favorite movies, in no particular order—except for the first two.  One is my favorite drama, the other my favorite comedy.  Bear in mind that I don’t watch a lot of movies, so this list could theoretically change if I were, say, to go on a movie watching binge for some odd reason, or (more feasibly) have a series of Hibernation Days with my wife.

Narrowing my list down to 10 wasn’t easy, though, even with the limited number of movies I’ve seen.  In fact, if I thought about this a little more I might come up with a slightly different list.  Also, I don’t normally watch movies more than once.  If I did, that might affect my list as well.  But with all of those caveats in place, here are my 10 all-time (for the moment!) favorite movies.

Chariots of Fire
The Princess Bride
Amazing Grace
The Lord of the Rings (complete trilogy)
A Christmas Carol [1984] (George C. Scott as Scrooge)
Star Wars Trilogy (the original trilogy only)
The Blind Side

I realize that’s more than 10 movies since I threw in two trilogies, but it’s my list; I figure I can be a little creative with it if I want.  That’s about as wild and crazy as I get.

Here are a few other movies that I like a lot; if you asked me to make a top 10 list on a different day, it might include some of these and exclude some of the above:

The Hiding Place
The Passion of the Christ
To Kill a Mockingbird
We Were Soldiers
The Patriot
Driving Miss Daisy
Big Fish
Secondhand Lions
Remember the Titans
The Shawshank Redemption
I Am Sam
Batman Begins
Finding Nemo
Dead Poets Society

One more list, and then I’m done.  Based on what I know about them, these movies might supplant some of those on my original list, if I were ever to actually take the time to watch them.

To End All Wars
Taking Chance
Band of Brothers
Schindler’s List
Hotel Rwanda
The Killing Fields

I’ll close with two requests.

  • Leave me a list of your favorite movies in the comments.
  • Name one movie—either on the last list, or not mentioned above at all—that you think I just have to watch.  Tell me why you think I should, too.  (Please note:  There are no musicals on any of these lists.  There’s a reason for that.)
