A friend and long-time coworker of mine retired last October. He found out this summer that he has pancreatic cancer. Yesterday there was more disheartening news. The cancer is very aggressive and has spread to both lungs. His prognosis is poor.
I talked to him a little while ago. He is, of course, trying to come to grips with the news, and it’s hard. His main concern for now is his family.
They started a blog in August to keep everyone updated on his condition. Yesterday his daughter spent some time reflecting on her father’s faith and love:
I think greatness truly exists when one walks through the valley of the shadow of death and fears no evil. In the same conversation in which dad was telling me aspects of the doctor’s news, he was truly more concerned about Ben and James’ pink eye. Greatness exists in the true acts of selflessness evidenced by putting others before yourself even during a time of individual crisis.
A few of you reading this will know Gary, but most of you won’t. Either way, if you think about him and his family, remember them in your prayers. And if you’re so inclined, you could even drop by their blog and let them know that you’re praying for them. Here’s the link: Gary Bixler Updates & News
