Thanks, Jeri. We had a great time at home yesterday. We invited a couple of single friends over for dinner, ate, talked a lot, and played games. Hope you had a good day, too!

If you ever get the chance, see the movie called Zeitgeist. Some of the stuff in it is probably hyperbole, but you will see the similarities between Christianity and earlier religions; and yes, there are doubts as to the existence of a Jesus, even if you personally don't think there are.

You know very well you could be wrong about your religion and may be destined for hell, if what any of the other religions preach is true. You decided to disregard others because they are alien to the environment you grew in(I think very few people actually care to find out what other religions have to offer). I chose to go one step ahead and disregard yours as well.

I do understand the need to believe in a god (fear of death, the need to feel special, something to help you through bad times) but I do not sympathize with it because it absolves you of responsibility; I was there at one point, although never religious I believed in a god. But that belief went against everything I see in the natural world. There were a couple of questions that sort of made me discard the idea of a god when I was on the fence: if I had not heard about the concept of god from the time I was born, would I still believe in one, seeing all that happens in the natural world? If he/she (notice how most religions are sexist too) existed, why would it matter what I did from one moment to another on a insignificant planet in an insignificant corner of an infinitely large universe? Would god see or care if I picked my nose inside my own house? What kind of a voyeuristic, invisible creature was this? Once you realize the stupidity and elaborate stories that people think up, all those walls come down. It is far more liberating than placing your trust in an invisible being.

I'm pretty sure you either won't take this seriously or you will see this as a test of your faith. If you can't see the inherent fallacies in your religion there's not much more I can say to even get you to start thinking, because where faith is concerned, logic goes out of the window. I have argued with Christians before and the arguments are always circular: God exists because there is a Bible and the Bible exists because there is a God. If you place your faith in a 2000 year old book written by men, god help you.

You know what, it's a good thing I posted here, just to put my thoughts down in words. If nothing else, I can at least tell this to people who have not been indoctrinated yet and hope it makes a difference.

The Christian message is unique in numerous ways, actually. Most people find at least one of the unique aspects of Christianity highly offensive, and that is Jesus's own insistence that no one can know God apart from Him. I didn't invent that idea (I probably never would have), but I do believe it's true.

Not everyone who claims to be a Christian is, of course, and that includes many priests and churchgoers. "Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. " (1 Cor. 6:9-10)

Finally, the evidence that Jesus existed is overwhelming. And if he existed (which I don't doubt at all), we're left with only one option, as C.S. Lewis argued:

<blockquote>"A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on the level with a man who says he is a poached egg - or he would be the devil of hell. You must take your choice. Either this was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us."</blockquote>

If you'd like to read more about the reliability of the New Testament documents and their testimony regarding Jesus, here's a good place to start:

I find the overall message of Christianity fairly run-of-the-mill stuff that you find in every other religion.

I was only talking about what you mentioned in the blog; apparently I can only be a good person and go to heaven if I believe in Christ (whose existence is highly circumspect anyway; he may have been completely fictional or just a very good person in his time); so all those priests who believe in Christ but abuse children will go to heaven, eh? This notion is what is nauseating, and disturbing.

If you believe everything the Bible says you should be stoning homosexuals and putting adulterers to death. But you don't, because you pick and choose what you would like to believe and that, sir, is why you don't get your morality from a God, and especially not a God of the Bible.

Or I may be completely wrong and you think everything that the Bible says is true and people should be killed or punished for eternity for silly offenses.

Hi, Steve. Thanks for visiting and commenting. Mom <em>was </em>wonderful (and believed the same things I do). I'm wondering if you've actually ever read Jesus's words. If you find what I've said nauseating, I think you'll find what he said even more so.

"I’m afraid there are many who think that as long as you believe in God and try to live a pretty good life, you’ll go to heaven. I want to say this as bluntly as I can—that’s a lie. My goal in this post isn’t to preach a sermon, but if you believe something like that, I can’t urge you strongly enough to pick up a Bible and read one of the gospels."

Your mom sounds like a nice person, but you seem like a right piece of work. Your self-righteousness is nauseating. Yeah, Jesus would be proud of you for your wonderful words of kindness and love. You religious nutters are very good at fear-mongering, aren't you?

I'm not attacking your mom or your memory of her, but how long are you going to spread the "word of god as in the bible" (which, btw, is downright evil at places) and how many more generations are you going to ruin with blind faith?
